Marine painting focuses on maritime subjects, including ships, harbours, and coastal scenes, which gained significant popularity in Britain and Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional pieces are typically executed using oil paints on stretched woven canvas or wooden panels, housed within giltwood or plaster-moulded frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition, brushwork techniques, and the presence of artist signatures or period framing.

This type of artwork provides a focal point when hung against neutral or dark panelled walls, pairing well with natural textures like wood and leather.

Preservation requires hanging paintings away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity, keeping temperatures stable, and avoiding chemical cleaning agents on the canvas surface.
