Ormolu refers to the technique of applying finely ground, high-carat gold-mercury amalgam to a bronze object, popular in French decorative arts during the 18th and 19th centuries to create a rich, durable golden finish.

These pieces were typically produced via the lost-wax casting method using bronze, followed by mercury gilding, and often mounted on decorative bases made of marble, slate, or painted wood.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-chased details that reveal crisp tool marks under magnification, heavier weight due to solid bronze construction, and signs of wear in the gilding that expose the warm bronze base underneath.

These decorative objects add a touch of classical elegance when placed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or console table to create a focal point that contrasts with clean, modern lines.

Maintain these objects by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth; avoid chemical cleaners, polishes, and abrasive materials that can strip or damage the delicate historical mercury gilding.
