FAQs

Maritime painting encompasses artworks that focus significantly on the sea, ships, and seafaring life, gaining major prominence during the Golden Age of Dutch painting and continuing through the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These works were typically created using oil paints on stretched linen canvas, framed in ornate composition or carved gilded wooden frames to protect the edges and enhance the visual presentation.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, inspecting the pigment composition under ultraviolet light, checking for makers signatures or stamps, and analyzing the accuracy of the ships rigging and construction for the period.

An antique maritime painting serves as a strong focal point and can be balanced in a modern space by pairing it with clean-lined neutral furniture and restrained decor to highlight its historical narrative.

To preserve these works, keep them out of direct sunlight, maintain stable relative humidity between 40% and 50%, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners on both the canvas and the gilded frame.
