Early 18th Century Brass Chocolate Pot

18th century
Sold 6 February 2025 · Carse Antiques
This “Early 18th Century Brass Chocolate Pot” found a buyer.

It was listed by Carse Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

Early 18th century, probably Dutch, brass chocolate pot with original iron and wooden handle. The turned walnut handle is especially nice. Most of these I have seen have had a lid but this example does not show any evidence of having a lid as there are no marks and the top edge is rolled over. The pot does have a few dints and marks but this is not surprising due to its considerable age.

Chocolate pots date back to the introduction of cocoa into Europe during the 17th century, where specialised vessels were developed to froth and serve the luxury hot drink among affluent households.

These vessels were typically constructed from hand-beaten sheet brass or copper with riveted joints, paired with a turned wooden handle to insulate against heat during use on a hearth.

Authentic pieces exhibit period manufacturing traits such as hand-hammered surface irregularities, brazed or riveted seams, heavy patination, and turned timber handles characteristic of early metalworking techniques.

Such metallic pieces can be displayed on open shelving, mantelpieces, or sideboards to introduce textural contrast, historical depth, and metallic warmth to transitional or traditional room schemes.

Preservation involves dusting with a soft dry cloth and avoiding harsh chemical polishes or abrasive cleaners to retain the historic patina and natural surface oxidisation.
