This 1870 antique Anatolian Kirsehir village prayer rug dates from the second half of the 19th century and measures 192 cm high, 112 cm wide, and 1 cm deep. Hand-knotted from wool, the piece presents a soft yellow or camel coloured ground with a cream central field, accented by muted red, pink, and green tones. The pictorial composition includes an abstract architectural design with a pointed mihrab niche, two buildings at the base, tall columns supporting large urns, a central tree of life motif with carnations, and geometric floral borders. The textile shows slight even wear and good pile, and has been hand washed. Today, this floor covering serves practical use in a home or functions effectively as a decorative wall hanging in a living room, study, or hallway.

Kirsehir rugs originate from Central Anatolia in Turkey, traditionally woven in village settings featuring distinctive prayer niche arches, stepped borders, and natural dye palettes dominated by shades of red, cream, and green.

These rugs are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile constructed on a wool warp and weft foundation, coloured with vegetable and mineral dyes native to the Anatolian region.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display natural dye colour variation known as abrash, irregular hand-spun yarn thickness, symmetrical double knots, and wool foundations rather than cotton.

Anatolian prayer rugs can be layered over neutral flatweave carpets, displayed as decorative wall hangings, or positioned in entryways and reading nooks to add architectural structure to contemporary spaces.

Vacuum gently without a rotating suction brush, rotate periodically to ensure balanced light exposure, use a quality underlay to reduce fiber wear, and consult a specialist carpet restorer for cleaning.
