A hand coloured engraving is an intaglio print where ink is transferred from lines etched into a metal plate, after which watercolour tints are applied manually by hand.

Traditional frames from this era were typically constructed from solid timber such as pine, oak, or gesso over wood, often finished with hand applied pigments or gilding.

Authentic period prints exhibit plate marks in the paper, fine dot patterns under magnification indicative of engraving, and aged paper characteristics such as toning and foxing.

Such pieces add character when hung in groupings on panelled walls, placed on narrow wall spaces, or integrated into eclectic gallery displays.

Preservation requires framing with acid free materials, keeping the piece away from direct sunlight, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent paper degradation.
