Zigzag wriggle-work floral engraving: hand-cut using a rocking chisel.
Cast zoomorphic handles and bun feet: soldered assembly with soft cast seams.
Soft grey oxidisation and scattered surface pitting: natural age across the pewter.
Cast brass cherub finial: rubbed high points showing old hand wear.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th century European birthing bowl is crafted from silver-grey pewter and brass, with a stamp carrying a maker's mark and the date 1760. The round lidded vessel stands on three ball feet and features twin S-scroll handles shaped like stylised bird heads, an engraved wriggle-work floral motif around the body and lid, and a brass cherub holding a bird as a finial. The piece is in very good original used condition with natural patination. Measuring 17 cm high, 28 cm wide and 20 cm deep, it sits well on a sideboard top in a dining room, living room or hallway as a decorative display container or tabletop accent.

FAQs

A birthing bowl, often termed an ecuelle, is a covered metal dish historically presented to mothers following childbirth to serve nourishing broths. These items typically feature detailed surface engraving, dual handles, and decorative finials.

These vessels were cast from pewter, an alloy consisting predominantly of tin mixed with copper or lead. Craftsmen used moulds for casting, hand-engraved floral motifs onto the metal body, and attached separately cast brass or bronze elements such as lid finials.

Authenticity is indicated by period-correct touchmarks on the base, minor surface irregularities from casting, hand-engraved decoration, and a matte grey patina created by natural oxidisation over time.

A pewter bowl can be placed as a decorative centrepiece on a sideboard top, mantelpiece, or within an open bookcase to introduce historic metalwork textures to modern decor.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive metal polishes, chemical cleaning solutions, or immersion in water, as these can strip the original patina and degrade delicate engraving.
