FAQs

Georgian and Regency portraiture typically features idealized subject matter, soft natural lighting, and pastoral or atmospheric backgrounds, often capturing children or nobility in formal yet relaxed poses.

These works were traditionally executed with oil paints applied to stretched woven canvas, housed within heavily carved and gilded composition or wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas weave, the composition and oxidisation of the oil paint layers under magnification, the construction of the wooden stretcher bars, and the ageing patination of the gilt frame.

An antique portrait creates a strong focal point when hung against neutral or dark feature walls, contrasting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary spatial design.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, maintaining stable relative humidity and temperature levels, and dusting the canvas gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
