Victorian portraiture from the 19th century typically features formal sitters captured in detailed period attire, utilising chiaroscuro lighting and muted backgrounds to emphasize the subjects stature and social background.

These artworks were predominantly executed in oil paint on linen canvas or wooden panels, presented inside carved softwood frames adorned with composition ornament and real gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces generally display age-appropriate craquelure across the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the canvas reverse, and minor wear to the gilded gesso layers on the frame corners.

A gilded Victorian portrait functions effectively as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console table, or within an eclectic gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings and monochrome photographs.

Maintain stable humidity and temperature levels away from direct sunlight, cleaning the gilded frame gently with a dry feather duster and avoiding water or liquid solvents on the oil canvas.
