Description

An exceptional antique Victorian leather and carved walnut sofa. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1860-1880 period.

It is a very rare model, very high quality and of lovely proportions. The solid walnut frame is beautifully carved and has a lovely colour tone. The deep buttoned leather upholstery has a gorgeous and striking patina. It stands on brass casters and looks amazing from all angles.

We have had the frame re-polished, the leather has been hand coloured and revived to give this stunning patinated brown colour tone. The condition is excellent for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Chesterfield sofa gained prominence during the Victorian era, characterised by deep button tufting and rolled arms, becoming a staple of refined drawing rooms and gentlemens clubs.

Authentic period pieces typically feature a solid hardwood frame, such as walnut or mahogany, combined with hand-dyed leather upholstery, horsehair stuffing, and traditional coil springs.

Authentication involves inspecting the frame construction for hand-carved details, checking for traditional joinery methods, observing natural leather ageing and patina, and examining the webbing and underside materials.

This piece can serve as a sophisticated anchor in a contemporary living space, contrasting cleanly against neutral walls or paired with minimalist metallic accents and modern lighting.

Preservation requires keeping the leather conditioned with appropriate specialised balms, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, and gently dusting the carved wooden frame regularly.
