Nineteenth-century bronze sculptures frequently depicted animal subjects and classical motifs, influenced by the French Animalier school and romanticism. Foundry casting techniques advanced significantly during this period, allowing for highly detailed representations of movement and anatomy.

These pieces were traditionally produced using the lost-wax method or sand casting, utilising a copper and tin alloy known as bronze. Patination was commonly applied by hand using chemicals to achieve various shades of brown, green, or black.

Authentic period bronzes typically exhibit cold-worked chased details, appropriate patination showing age, and sometimes foundry marks or artist signatures cast into the base. The weight, density, and construction of the casting seam also provide indicators of age.

These sculptures can be displayed on a mantelpiece, a study desk, or within a bookcase to introduce classical texture and sculptural form. Pairing them with natural wood surfaces and neutral tones allows the dark metal to stand out as a focal point.

Maintain bronze sculptures by dusting gently with a soft, dry cloth and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the patina from moisture and handling oils. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, polishes, or chemical solvents that could strip the original finish.
