19th Century Neapolitan Grand Tour Bronze of Narcissus on Fossil Marble Base

19th century
Description

A charming 19th-century Neapolitan Grand Tour bronze figure of Narcissus, after the celebrated antique discovered at Pompeii in 1862 and now generally identified as Dionysus.

The youthful figure is shown in a graceful contrapposto pose, with his head inclined downward, richly modelled curled hair, classical sandals and drapery falling from one shoulder.

Finely modelled for its small scale, the bronze retains a pleasing dark brown patina with natural age-related variation and light surface wear.

The figure is mounted on a substantial black fossiliferous marble base, with attractive natural shell and fossil inclusions visible throughout the stone.

Bronzes of this type were produced in Naples during the later 19th century for Grand Tour travellers and collectors, inspired by the important archaeological discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum.

There is a visible transverse casting or assembly line to one thigh, believed to relate to the original manufacture rather than later accidental damage.

A particularly appealing small-scale Grand Tour bronze, ideal for a desk, library, study or cabinet collection.

Origin: Naples, Italy

Date: 19th century

Material: Bronze and fossiliferous marble

Height: approximately 14 cm

Condition

Good antique condition overall with minor surface wear, marks and variations to the patina consistent with age and handling. Some light green oxidation is visible in recessed areas and around the feet. The marble base has minor surface scratches and age-related marks. No major losses or structural damage apparent.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Grand Tour bronzes are 19th-century scaled replicas of ancient Greek and Roman statues. Wealthy young aristocrats purchased these pieces during educational travels across continental Europe, particularly in Italy.

These statuettes were traditionally cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting methods and often coated with a dark chemical patina. They were typically mounted on bases made from Belgian black marble, Siena marble, or local fossil stone.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased anatomical detail, age-appropriate patination with natural wear on exposed areas, and period-correct marble plinths. Foundry markings or signatures from known Neapolitan workshops such as Sommer or Chiurazzi may also be present.

Display the statue on a minimalist bookshelf, a mantelpiece, or an office desk alongside contemporary art or textured ceramics to create visual contrast. Grouping bronze figures with natural stone or dark timber elements provides balance and historical depth.

Dust the bronze gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft bristle brush. Avoid water, harsh chemical cleaners, or liquid metal polishes, as these can strip the original patina; a light application of neutral microcrystalline wax can preserve the metal finish.
