Armoires originated in Europe during the medieval period primarily for storing armour and vestments, later evolving into domestic wardrobes for clothing storage as homes incorporated built-in closet spaces much later.

Traditional pieces are constructed from solid hardwoods like oak, walnut, or fruitwoods, often featuring hand-carved decorative motifs, panelled doors, pegged joinery, and bevelled glass mirrors.

Authenticity is determined by examining construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails in drawers, traditional timber shrinkage, original hardware, and signs of hand-carving rather than modern machine replication.

Pairing a large wooden wardrobe with minimalist contemporary decor creates a striking focal point, allowing the historical craftsmanship to contrast against neutral walls and clean architectural lines.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent wood cracking, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically treating the timber with appropriate natural waxes to nourish the grain.
