FAQs

Portraits from this era typically feature realistic depictions of subjects, often rendered in oil on canvas with a focus on dramatic lighting, moody backgrounds, and meticulous attention to facial features and period attire.

Authentic period portraits are typically executed in oil paints on stretched linen or cotton canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, the type of stretcher bars used, craquelure in the oil paint layers, and the construction and ageing of the frame.

Pairing a traditional portrait with modern minimalist furniture creates a striking contrast that adds depth, history, and character to a contemporary space.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight and high humidity, and consult a professional conservator for periodic cleaning of the canvas surface and frame.
