Description

A rare fine antique silk Farahan (Fereghan) rug woven in the late 19th century.  An exquisite piece of workmanship from the Western Persia region, circa 1870-1880.  Farahan is famous for using pale blues, purples, greens and yellow dyes.  Which can be seen on this wonderful antique silk rug, as you walk around the rug and look at it from the darker side, and into the pile.  Silk rugs always change colour from one end to the other quite dramatically, as does this rare piece.

This colour palette is a typical array of dyes for these elegant silk rugs from Fereghan (Farahan) in Western Persia.  The silk glistens beautifully when the light catches it.  Ideal to be used hung on the wall as a work of art as it is, or on the floor in a low traffic area such as bedroom.  The condition is good with some signs of lower pile in areas and a couple of old repairs, but structurally very good for a rug over 140 years old.  Please view the additional 11 images to see the rugs pile up close.

Farahan rugs are hand-knotted carpets produced in the Farahan district of west-central Persia, renowned for their fine weave, exceptional wool quality, and sophisticated botanical motifs developed primarily during the 19th century.

These carpets typically feature finely spun wool or silk foundations and piles, woven using asymmetrical Persian knots on cotton or wool warps, and dyed using natural vegetable colorants such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic pieces are identified by their characteristic dense knot density, supple handle, traditional Herati or medallion designs, natural abrash color variations, and the specific characteristics of the selvedges and fringe construction.

An antique rug adds texture and historical grounding to contemporary spaces; place it on polished hardwood floors to anchor minimalist seating arrangements or layer it over a neutral natural fibre base for added depth.

Preserve antique carpets by vacuuming gently without a beater bar, keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading, rotating them annually for even wear, and using professional textile conservators for cleaning.
