An antique Hamadan rug originates from Hamadan and its surrounding villages in western Iran, one of the oldest trading markets in the region. These carpets are known for their sturdy village craftsmanship and diverse geometric and floral motifs.

Traditional Hamadan rugs are hand-knotted using handspun wool for both the pile and the foundation threads, often featuring a cotton warp and weft in later pieces. Natural dyes derived from plants, roots, and insects were historically employed to create rich, lasting colour palettes.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit irregularities in weave and symmetry due to their village or nomadic origin, alongside natural dye variations known as abrage. Examining the back reveals hand-tied knots and natural wool imperfections that machine-made reproductions lack.

Such textiles add texture, warmth, and historical depth to contemporary spaces. They work effectively as floor coverings in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms, contrasting against minimalist furniture and neutral flooring.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar to protect the pile and fringe. Professional antique rug cleaning should be performed periodically, and the textile should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading.
