Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

French washstands and dressing tables evolved during the 19th century as bedrooms became more private and specialised spaces for personal hygiene and grooming. These pieces combined functional marble surfaces for washing with decorative mirrors, reflecting the craftsmanship of provincial and urban French cabinet makers.

Traditional pieces are typically constructed from solid oak, walnut, or fruitwoods, featuring hand-carved details and dovetail joinery. White marble tops were specifically integrated for their water-resistant and hygienic properties, often paired with brass or bronze hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, traditional mortise and tenon joints, and old growth timber characteristics such as medullary rays in oak. Additionally, original mercury or silvered glass in the tilting mirrors often displays slight oxidisation and imperfections consistent with age.

A vintage washstand serves as an exceptional focal point in a contemporary bedroom or hallway, functioning as a vanity, console, or drinks cabinet. Pair it with minimalist modern accessories to create a balanced contrast between old-world craftsmanship and clean, modern lines.

Protect the timber with microcrystalline wax applied sparingly to maintain the natural grain without building up residue. Clean the marble top with mild, pH-neutral soap and water, avoiding acidic substances like lemon or vinegar that can etch the polished stone surface.
