Hamadan rugs originate from the city of Hamadan and surrounding villages in western Iran, which is one of the oldest trading markets in the world for handwoven carpets. Weavers in this region traditionally produce durable utility carpets featuring geometric and Herati motifs using handspun wool.

Authentic pieces typically feature a sturdy cotton foundation with handspun wool pile dyed using natural vegetable colours. They are constructed using the symmetric Turkish knot or asymmetric Persian knot, finished with hand-bound selvedges and knotted fringes.

Authenticity is determined by examining the irregularity in the knotting, natural colour variations known as abrash, handspun wool texture, and traditional tribal geometric medallion motifs characteristic of the Hamadan district.

Layering this floor covering over neutral hardwood flooring introduces texture, warmth, and heritage pattern to contemporary or minimalist rooms. It functions effectively as a focal point in hallways, studies, or living spaces.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar, professional specialist cleaning only, and keeping the textile out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading of the natural dyes.
