Description

This charming early-20th-century oil painting by Danish artist Knud Sinding (1898-1947) depicts a kitchen interior with mother and child.

On this morning in early Summer, a gentle breeze passes through an open kitchen window. The room partially illuminated by a crisp glow. Looking down, she washes dishes, occasionally glancing above the voile towards a resplendent garden in bloom. Her child scuttles and chatters within a sturdy wooden walker.

Sinding had two passions - Italy and his family. Here, in around 1912, he’s probably depicting his wife, Mia, and child - possibly Eva. Later in life, his walls would be adorned with paintings of his children.

Monogrammed in the lower right and held within a period frame, which is probably original.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 30” x 30” / 76cm x 76cm

Year of creation: c. 1912

Labels & Inscriptions: Gallery stamp from Anton Hansens Kunsthandel along with a further exhibition label. Monogrammed ‘A H’ presumably by Anton Hansen. O.H. Olsen framer’s stamp.

Condition: Artwork presents well. Fine craquelure but the paint is stable. Frame with some light wear.

Artist’s auction maximum: £2,690

Knud Sinding was a Danish artist well-admired for his landscapes and interiors. He trained under Kristian Zahrtmann (1843-1917) and later at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

FAQs

Genre painting depicts aspects of everyday life by depicting ordinary people engaged in common activities, gaining prominence during the 17th century and continuing through subsequent artistic movements.

Traditional oil paintings are typically executed using ground pigment suspended in a drying oil, such as linseed oil, applied to prepared stretched canvas, linen, or wood panels, and housed in hand-carved or molded frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the oil layer, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and pigment analysis under ultraviolet light.

An antique painting can serve as a focal point in contemporary spaces, pairing well with neutral walls and subtle lighting to highlight the texture and historical palette of the artwork.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature, avoiding direct sunlight, keeping canvases free from dust using a soft brush, and refraining from using liquid cleaners on the painted surface.
