Antique English Georgian Old Sheffield Plate Miniature Chestnut Urn

18th century
Description

Everything about this delightful Antique Miniature Chestnut Urn screams Georgian Old Sheffield Plate, circa 1790 ~ Everything that is other than the indisputable fact that it was presented to Farmer E, Jones of Brynffynnon, Rhuddlan at the Bodrhyddan Agricultural Show in 1920, as the owner of the "Best Dairy Cow" in show. In view of the prevailing economic climate during those early years immediately following the horrors of the First World War, not to speak of the grave difficulties facing the farming community at that time, it would appear highly unlikely that such a piece would then have been commissioned for this purpose. Far more likely is it that the piece is exactly what it at first glance appears to be, and that it was donated, perhaps by the owners of Bodrhyddan Hall, on whose estate the Show was held, it being then subsequently engraved for presentation.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Fused plate bleeding to base copper: early plating method before electroplating was invented.
Ram's head ring handles: classical ornamentation popular in the 1780s and 1790s.
Gadrooned wire borders: neat edging applied to early fused-plate wares.
Presentation inscription dated 1920: marks the later reuse of the original Georgian vessel.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This eighteenth-century Georgian decorative urn is constructed from Old Sheffield plate, silver, and copper. It displays a striking two-tone finish of silver and copper, with exposed copper tones visible beneath the silver. The body features an engraved inscription reading Best Dairy Cow, flanked by detailed rams-head handles with hanging rings. The structure includes a turned urn finial on a high-domed cover, a gadrooned rim moulding, and a stepped foot resting upon a square plinth base. Measuring 21.6 cm high, 13.3 cm wide, and 10 cm deep, the miniature chestnut urn is well-suited for display in a gentleman's library or positioned upon a mantelpiece in a traditional home interior setting.

FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a manufacturing technique developed in the 18th century where a layer of sterling silver was thermally fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into workable sheets.

Georgian metal urns were typically crafted using fused silver and copper sheets, incorporating die-struck decorative mounts, cast side handles, and hand-chased detailing over a copper core.

Authentic pieces frequently exhibit copper bleeding through areas of silver wear, visible raised seams, folded silver edges, and a warm lustre distinct from electroplated silver.

A Georgian metal urn functions as an accent object when positioned on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf alongside contemporary ceramics or sculptural foliage.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to maintain the metal finish while preserving natural surface oxidisation.
