Introduction

Antique Stoneware Jugs

Stoneware is clay fired hot enough to vitrify, so the body holds liquid on its own. Salt thrown into the kiln forms a thin glassy skin over it, faintly pitted to the eye. That finish became standard for utilitarian jugs in the Rhineland, and later in England, where 19th-century potteries turned them out for taverns, dairies and the drinks trade.

The jug you're most likely to meet on Sellingantiques is a late Victorian salt-glazed one from Doulton's Lambeth works. Doulton appears in 25 of 83 titles, Lambeth in 23, and the two together in 20, which makes that one phrase the closest thing the category has to a house style. Harvest jugs, whisky and tavern jugs and jubilee commemoratives are the recurring named types within it.

Around a quarter of listings sit in that Doulton Lambeth group. A silver or plated rim, sometimes with a hinged lid, recurs almost only on those bodies. English relief-moulded and figural jugs make up another slice, with puzzle jugs, character subjects and portrait pieces among them, and sets turn up throughout: graduated threes and fours, pairs, a trio.

A smaller German group runs much earlier: Westerwald, Raeren, Siegburg and Bartmann jugs dated from roughly 1520 to the 18th century. The heading is loosely bounded at the other end, with jasperware, parian, ironstone, majolica, flow blue, slipware and blue-and-white pottery jugs filed alongside the true stoneware. Dating is often a bracket rather than a year, 19th century or Victorian, and where decades are given they cluster in the 1880s and 1890s.

What Sets Them Apart

Age and origin do most of the work. The German end is both the oldest and the top of the range: Westerwald, Siegburg and Bartmann jugs dated c.1520, c.1700 and the 18th century sit well above the late Victorian and c.1900 English pieces that fill the bottom. Everything with a clean year on it falls between 1800 and 1900, so the early material is the exception, not the norm.

After that, it's a question of how much the jug tells you about itself. A named pottery, a named Doulton artist or an attribution lifts a piece above the anonymous brown jug. So does subject: jubilee commemoratives, Nelson, Victoria and Wellington, a cricket match, a greyhound, monkeys, a jug made for the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Plain and undecorated sits lowest.

Two other things push upward. Silver and sterling mounts recur on the mid- and upper-range Doulton Lambeth jugs rather than the cheapest, and size is a habit in this category, with large in 14 titles and very large, massive, huge and a stated 1.5 gallon capacity clustering above the base. Sets hold their own too, graduated groups and pairs sitting in the middle and upper part of the range.

Questions people ask

Antique Stoneware Jugs: Frequently Asked Questions

Why do so many listings say Doulton Lambeth?

Doulton is named in 25 of 83 titles and Lambeth in 23, with the pair together in 20. That single phrase dominates the category.

Lambeth was the south London pottery district, and the salt-glazed stoneware made there in the late Victorian years is what most of these jugs are.

How old are stoneware jugs on the site?

Every listing carrying a clean year falls between 1800 and 1900. Where decades are given they cluster in the 1880s and 1890s, with a handful in the 1900s.

A third of the category is dated only to a century or a reign, 19th Century or Victorian. Earlier dating is thin and belongs almost entirely to the German group.

What are Westerwald and Bartmann jugs?

Both are Rhineland stoneware. Westerwald jugs are typically grey with cobalt blue decoration; Bartmann, also called Bellarmine, carry a bearded mask applied to the neck.

Seven sampled titles name Westerwald, Raeren, Siegburg, Bartmann or Bellarmine, dated between roughly 1520 and 1720. They are the oldest and highest-priced end of the archive, including a royal-portrait Westerwald of about 1700.

Are silver mounts common on these jugs?

They recur, though on well under a tenth of listings. Silver rim, silver collar and sterling silver collar with hinged lid all turn up in titles.

The mounts sit almost exclusively on Doulton Lambeth bodies, and on the mid- and upper-range ones rather than the cheapest. One Georgian jug carries a sterling collar and hinged lid dated 1828.

Do jugs come in sets?

Yes. Jugs in the plural appears in 11 titles, about an eighth of the category.

Sampled sets include graduated threes and fours, pairs, a trio, and one jug with matching drinking vessels. Graduated means the same pattern in descending sizes, sold together.

Why are non-stoneware jugs listed under this heading?

The category is loosely bounded. Jasperware, parian, ironstone, majolica, flow blue, slipware and blue-and-white Staffordshire jugs all sit alongside the true salt-glazed stoneware, and two tea sets appear as well.

Salt-glazed English and German stoneware still dominates the listings. The other bodies are a scattered minority.
