This nineteenth-century French stoneware absinthe jug takes a zoomorphic form, sculpted as a naive fox head with a double-holed snout at the front. The piece has a warm brown glazed finish over terracotta, with a rounded bulbous body and a raised collar moulding around the neck. The visible glaze shows subtle pooling and lighter tonal highlights across the rounded lower section and ears. Measuring 21 cm in height, 13 cm in width, and 15.5 cm in depth including the handle, the pitcher is suited for display on a sideboard top within a rustic farmhouse interior. The design brings character to a dining room or living space as a decorative vessel.

These ceramic vessels were produced in 19th-century France to hold water for diluting absinthe during serving rituals, often incorporating zoomorphic or regional folk-art forms.

They were typically wheel-thrown or hand-moulded from local clay, coated in lead or salt glazes, and kiln-fired at low temperatures characteristic of provincial terracotta.

Authentic period earthenware exhibits visible throwing lines, irregular glaze application, wear marks along the unglazed base, and subtle surface imperfections standard to early kiln firings.

Placing the vessel on an open kitchen shelf, a dining sideboard, or alongside modern studio pottery introduces organic texture and warm colour contrast to modern spaces.

Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth and spot clean glazed areas using warm water and mild liquid soap, avoiding complete immersion, abrasive pads, or chemical cleansers.
