Large Antique German Westerwald Blue & Grey Stoneware Pewter Lidded Jug C.1890

19th century
Description

An impressive and highly decorative antique German Westerwald salt-glazed stoneware jug, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1890.

Standing an impressive 35.5 cm tall, this substantial jug is beautifully decorated in traditional cobalt blue and grey, with exceptionally detailed raised relief ornamentation inspired by Renaissance and Baroque designs.

The generously proportioned bulbous body features large circular starburst medallions surrounded by intricate geometric patterns, scrolling foliage, floral motifs and ornamental beading. Particularly striking are the raised bearded figures and grotesque masks, reflecting the elaborate Historicist decorative styles popular in late Victorian Europe.

The tall cylindrical neck is equally richly decorated, incorporating further moulded facial masks, rosettes and architectural-style panels, enhanced by bands of deep cobalt-blue glaze.

The jug retains its ornate hinged pewter lid, featuring an elaborately decorated domed cover, pointed finial and decorative thumb lift. A substantial curved handle and shaped pouring spout complete the impressive form.

The underside bears an impressed number 616, believed to be a factory mould or pattern number.

A wonderful example of traditional German Westerwald craftsmanship, combining bold architectural form, elaborate relief decoration and the distinctive blue and grey salt-glazed finish for which the region is celebrated.

Westerwald stoneware is a type of salt-glazed pottery originating from the Westerwald region in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Traditionally characterised by cobalt blue and manganese purple decoration on a grey body, this craft flourished from the sixteenth century into the late nineteenth century.

These vessels are crafted from dense clay thrown on a wheel or moulded, then painted with cobalt blue oxide accents. They undergo high-temperature salt-glazing in a kiln, producing a distinctive orange-peel textured finish, and are frequently fitted with hinged pewter lids.

Authentic late nineteenth-century pieces feature sharp relief-moulded detail, cobalt blue pigmentation under a salt glaze, and impressed numbers or maker marks on the base. The pewter lids often show natural oxidisation and historic attachment marks near the handle.

Place the jug on a dark wood sideboard, bookshelf, or kitchen dresser as a focal decorative object. It pairs effectively with natural timber surfaces, modern ceramics, or rustic dining displays to add historic contrast.

Clean the stoneware body gently using warm water and a mild detergent with a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners on the glaze, and clean the pewter lid dry or with specialised metal polish to avoid discolouration of the surrounding pottery.
