Why is it called a Carlton House desk?

The name comes from a royal London residence, where the form first appeared. It described a writing table with a tiered bank of stationery drawers wrapping the back and sides, keeping correspondence to hand on an open top. The name stuck to the shape rather than to any one workshop, and it was revived on a large scale in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Are these desks Georgian?

Rarely. Only two of the 148 listings are dated to the 18th century, and one country-house estate desk is put at c1770, the earliest thing in the archive.
