19th century
Description

Antique Caucasian Chelaberd Kazak triple medallion rug.

Circa 1890.

A superb Kazak rug of the sought after and well known Chelaberd design, also known as Eagle (Adler) or Sunburst Kazak rugs. These rugs are from the Karabagh region of the South West Caucasus and are considered to be of Armenian origin. This example is of a rustic village weave with a well drawn triple medallion, the narrow border design is typical for the region.

The rug has superb colour with soft terracotta reds, yellows, blues, greens, ivory and browns; the weave is typical Kazak weave with long thick glossy pile.

Great condition, very slight even wear with excellent pile. There is some corrosion to the browns. The rug has superb thick heavy pile with a pelt like feel.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chelaberd Kazak rugs, originating from the southwestern Caucasus, are renowned for their distinctive radiating medallion motifs often referred to as Eagle or Sunburst designs. Hand-woven by tribal weavers in the late nineteenth century, these rugs feature bold geometric patterns and vibrant vegetable-dyed wools.

Traditional Caucasian rugs were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation. The yarn was dyed using natural botanical and mineral sources, such as madder root for deep reds and indigo for shades of blue.

Authentic antique Kazak rugs display hand-tied symmetrical knots on a wool warp and weft, resulting in a flexible, textured reverse. Key indicators include subtle variations in dye shades known as abrash, tribal geometric motifs, and thick wool pile with natural age-related softening.

An antique Caucasian rug brings warmth and graphic structure to modern spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist furniture or layered within contemporary eclectic schemes. Placing the rug on neutral floorboards creates a grounded focal point that anchors the surrounding decor.

To preserve an antique wool rug, vacuum gently using a suction-only attachment without a rotary brush to protect the fibres. Rotate the piece periodically to ensure even wear and light exposure, and utilise a quality rug underlay to prevent slipping and fibre crushing.
