Antique Samarkand Kelleh

1900 - 1920
Description

Samarkand was once the gateway to China.  As one of the principal cities of the silk route and the main commercial artery of Asia.  It thus became the Western outlet for woven carpets, known to dealers in the trade as East Turkestan. The main weaving centres were Khotan and Yarkand; their carpets were known simply as Samarkands. There is no obvious connection between Samarkand rugs of Khotan and Yarkand, designs varied with Moon Gul motifs, vases and pomegranates used in the main field of the design.

This Samarkand kelleh is in wonderful original condition, with a soft wool pile all over.  Lovely faded natural dyes of pink, pale greens and un-dyed off white wool.  A super pretty piece in great order.  Visit our barn showroom in Surrey, or we can show you this Samarkand rug at home soon.  Contact us in your preferred way for further assistance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Samarkand Kelleh rug is a hand-woven carpet originating from East Turkestan along the Silk Road. The term Kelleh refers to its specific long and relatively wide gallery proportions, which fall between a standard runner and a full-size room carpet.

These carpets are typically woven with hand-spun wool pile onto a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and mineral dyes were traditionally used to achieve soft terracotta, pink, gold, and cream hues.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical knotting and a fusion of Chinese, Persian, and Anatolian motifs, such as stepped diamond medallions or stylized pomegranates. They also display natural abrash colour variations across the pile due to batch-dyed yarn.

A Samarkand carpet works well as a grounding element in neutral spaces, pairing effectively with minimalist contemporary furniture or traditional timber pieces to add subtle geometric texture and warm colour.

Gentle vacuuming using a suction-only attachment preserves the wool fibres. A underlay should be placed beneath the rug to prevent slipping and uneven wear, and professional specialist cleaning is recommended for stain removal.
