A portrait miniature is a small, highly detailed painting, traditionally executed in watercolour on ivory, vellum, or card, popular from the 16th through the 19th centuries as personal keepsakes.

Nineteenth-century miniatures were typically painted with watercolour pigments onto thin organic sheets or card, mounted behind glass in metal bezels, and set within ebonised wooden or papier-mache frames with decorative hanging rings.

Authentic period miniatures feature microscopic brushwork such as stippling or hatching, authentic patina or oxidisation on brass components, and period-appropriate framing materials like ebonised wood or pressed papier-mache.

Display portrait miniatures in small wall alcoves, incorporate them into a gallery wall arrangement alongside larger framed works, or place them on a dedicated display easel upon a bookshelf or sideboard.

Keep the miniature out of direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, avoiding high humidity areas to protect delicate watercolour pigments and prevent structural warping of the support medium.
