Regency Reverse Glass Engravings Set of Four

Description

A set of four Regency period reverse glass engravings, each depicting allegorical scenes of mother and child, to include fruit-pickers and harvest time.

In original burr walnut frames.

One engraving has an old repair to the glass which has been done professionally. It isn't obvious and not noticeable when hung altogether.

These are really good decorating items.

There will be a small charge for packing and delivery on the UK Mainland and we can calculate the cost of International delivery.

FAQs

Reverse glass engravings, popular during the Georgian and Regency periods, involved applying a printed mezzotint or line engraving to the underside of a glass sheet. The paper backing was subsequently rubbed away leaving the ink on the glass, which was then hand-coloured from behind with oil paints to create a luminous image.

These works utilise clear float glass plates, oil-based printing inks, and hand-applied pigments. They were commonly mounted in birds-eye maple or mahogany frames featuring internal gilt slips to protect and elevate the Artwork.

Authentic period pieces display period glass characteristics, including minor inclusions, uneven thickness, and slight air bubbles. The reverse side often shows age-related darkening of paper or backings, along with hand-applied varnish or board backing secured with iron tacks.

A set of four can be arranged in a grid formation above a console table or sideboard to create a structured focal point. The natural timber tones and classical figures blend effectively against deep paint shades or neutral, textured wallpapers.
