Antique Worcester

18th century
Description

18th century worcester

This jug was manufactured betwen 1770-1785

It is most unusual as it is only approx 14cm tall.

And “The parrot pecking fruit-second version” I SC usually on either taller jugs OR plain thrown and turned shapes.

This jug has the worcester mask spout and moulded and incised body.

It has clearly the hatched crescent to the baseplate.

So whilst the pattern is not necessarily as rare as version one , the combination here is rather more unique.

As it is a small jug , press moulded with cabbage leaf and mask.

This jug was been in private family home for the majority of its existence and has never before been offered to the open market.

No chips, cracks hairlines or Frits

Just some signs of under glaze firing grit on the body towards the handle.

In exceptional condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Worcester mask jug is an 18th-century English porcelain vessel characteristically featuring a relief-moulded cabbage-leaf body and a spout formed in the shape of a bearded human face, or mask.

Early Worcester ceramics were made using soft-paste porcelain incorporating soapstone (steatite), which enhanced thermal resistance, and were decorated with underglaze cobalt blue printing or hand painting.

Authentic pieces frequently show underglaze blue marks such as crescents on the base, crisp leaf-moulding details, and a soft-paste body that displays a subtle greenish translucency when held to light.

Display the piece as a standalone accent on a sideboard top, arrange it inside a glass display cabinet among matching ceramics, or use it to hold fresh floral arrangements.

Hand-wash gently using warm water and a mild non-abrasive soap, avoiding prolonged soaking, automated dishwashers, and harsh chemical cleaners to safeguard the glaze and moulded features.
