Culvertons has dated this piece to the 1900s.
What it lacks in identifying marks it makes up with its sheer visual impact and quality. The dragon has been finely rendered by skillfully embossing a sheet of copper, which in turn is supported by a decorated hand-beaten iron surround - the two joined with hand-made copper rivets. What's particularly attractive and appealing to the collector is its original surface, thankfully untouched by over-enthusiastic cleaning - it still retains a lovely patina, an important factor when considering the value of such pieces.
