Nobody quite does moonlight quite like Camille Corot. Moonlit landscapes suited the artist's discreet artist's personality and painting. As Baudelaire astutely observed: "M. Corot is more a harmonist than a colourist, and his compositions, which are always entirely free of pedantry, are seductive just because of their simplicity of colour".

Here is a Corot-esque landscape that comes astonishingly close. Unsigned and dating from circa the 1860s, it may have been painted by an artist close to the Master or one of his students.

Painted on wooded panel, the painting measures 17.5 x 26.5 cm. Presented in a more recent frame, the overall size is 25.5 x 34.5 cm.
