1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 6ft 9in x 3ft 10in (205 x 118cm).

A good North West Persian 'Mazlahan' village rug from the Greater Hamadan Region.

Circa 1900/20.

Mazlahan village is located to the east of the city of Hamadan, the village is well known for producing a unique design of rug that is not found anywhere else. The unique feature of the design is the bold 'lightning strike' effect outlining the large central medallion.

This rug features a camel ground medallion containing a lattice of stars design, this is surrounded by a madder red field. The outer field has a dark indigo ground and is covered in columns of various flower heads. The main border is an ivory ground traditional design which is often found on Mazlahan rugs.

The rug is in good condition with slight wear and good pile. The rug is suitable for normal domestic use. There is a small old patch repair to the lower right hand corner. The rug has a slightly 'waisted' shape, getting very slightly narrower in the middle.

The rug has been hand washed and is ready for use or display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Mazlaghan rugs originate from the Hamadan region in central Iran and are characterised by a prominent central diamond or hexagonal medallion with distinct serrated, stepped edges, set against a contrasting field with geometric and floral border detailing.

These rugs were hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, often dyed with natural plant and mineral pigments, woven onto a sturdy cotton or wool warp and weft foundation.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-tied knots visible on the reverse, subtle abrash colour variations from natural dye batches, slight geometric asymmetry inherent to tribal weaving, and soft wear patterns consistent with age.

Place the rug on neutral hardwood or stone flooring to ground a living space or study, pairing its rich geometry with modern minimalist furniture, natural timber, or dark leather upholstery.

Vacuum regularly on a low setting without a rotating brush bar, rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear, clear spills immediately with a damp cloth, and consult a specialist rug restorer for deep cleaning.
