An Air Ministry Oak Pedestal Desk

1920 - 1940
Sold by Culvertons
Description

Antique furniture with a provable connection to a time and place has extra appeal. This provenance will often ignite interest from parties who are fascinated with that particular period of our history. This oak pedestal desk is just such a piece. An indication that this desk would have been used throughout World War II by the Air Ministry can be found on the top of each pedestal - an Air Ministry stamp, together with a '1937' date stamp and 'SS', which we believe is a department stamp, can be clearly seen. At this moment in time, we are not certain of which department this would have been, possibly supplies or salvage, but we would very much appreciate any information you may have on the subject. History aside, this desk is very comfortable to work at - not having a middle draw is a desirable feature and one we are continually on the lookout for, as It offers the user, especially our taller customers, plenty of legroom. As you can see from the images, the desk has been sensitively restored within our workshops. Its swan-necked handles are original, as is the black leather writing surface. The locks (working with keys supplied) are stamped ER, which suggests that the desk was refurbished shortly after the war, probably in the 1950s - on the back of one lock there is an indication that possibly this desk was connected to 102 RAF Squadron. A lovely panelled oak desk that is immersed in military history and ready to be used and enjoyed.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
