Biography

Landscape painter, etcher and illustrator (also known as Fred Lawson). Born in Yeadon, near Leeds, Yorkshire. Studied at Dewsbury Techical College, where he won a scholarship to Leeds School of Art, going on to the South Kensington College of Art, London, gaining medals for drawing. In 1910, after a painting excursion to Wensledale, he decided to settle there. He illustrated many books and articles including the Dalesman magazine and the Ripon Wakeman. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, the Walker Art Gallery, the Royal Glasgow Institute of the FIne Arts, as well in his local area. He married the artist Muriel Metcalf (1910-94); their daughter is Sonia Lawson RA. He died at Castle Bolton. A retrospective exhibition was held the Middlesbrough Art Gallery, 1969 and his work was shown, together with that of his wife and daughter, in 'A Family of Artists' at the Wakefield Art Gallery in 1989. Public galleries in Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield hold examples of his work.
