FAQs

The French Empire style emerged during the early 19th century, drawing heavy inspiration from the classical architecture and motifs of ancient Rome and Greece, characterised by symmetrical geometry, monumental proportions, and military-inspired ornamentation.

Cabinetmakers typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or flame veneer applied to a stable secondary timber core, complemented by cast, chased, and fire-gilded or polished brass mounts secured with traditional joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery, patination appropriate to the early 1800s, and cast bronze or brass mounts rather than modern electroplated alternatives.

Pairing heavy mahogany and brass bedframes with neutral linen bedding, minimalist walls, and modern lighting creates a balanced focal point that highlights the classical silhouette without overwhelming the space.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, applying traditional beeswax periodically to nourish the wood, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excessive moisture on both timber and metal surfaces.
