Georgian Oak Miniature Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

An Extremely Attractive And Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, Georgian, Oak Miniature Chest, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top, Over Two Short And Three Long Drawers Retaining Original Turned Wooden Knobs, Flanked By Elegant Half Turned Colums, Raised On Elegant Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

A beautifully charming little piece of 18th century miniature furniture, constructed from rich, warm oak timbers which retain an exceptional colour and patina, it boasts original handles and feet. Almost certainly it was made as a sample piece of furniture originally.

There is regular debate over whether miniature furniture was made as an apprentice piece, which is when a craftsmen who was looking for a job at a workshop would create something to showcase their talents. Or whether it was made as a travelling salesmans sample piece, which is when a few items were produced as scale models but a well established workshop as a form of physical catalogue in advance of a travelling salesman’s road trip around the country, for him to use to try and fill his order book with full size counterparts.

It is certainly a charming piece of antique miniature furniture however and in good condition, ready to be placed straight into the home. It would work wonderfully on top of a dressing table, or full size chest of drawers, in a bedroom for storage of cuff links, jewellery or similar small but valuable items.

Circa 1790.

Height 15.5in.

Width 17in.

Depth 7in.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian miniature chest of drawers is a small-scale replica of a full-sized chest, produced in Great Britain during the eighteenth or early nineteenth century. These items were constructed as cabinetmakers apprentice pieces to demonstrate joinery skills or as portable salesman samples.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. Drawers featured hand-cut dovetail joints, solid timber drawer linings, and turned wooden knobs or cast brass hardware.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, hand-cut joinery with slight irregularities, original iron fixings, and natural wear consistent with age. Shrinkage gaps in timber panels and aged patination inside drawer cavities also indicate origin.

A miniature chest functions effectively on a sideboard top, desk, or open shelving as a decorative container for small items such as keys, jewellery, or stationery. It adds texture and historical balance when placed alongside contemporary glass or ceramic pieces.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cotton cloth. Apply a thin coat of natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the original finish, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and damp environments.
