19th century
Description

A beautiful large signed oil on canvas by this important American impressionist painter Frank Myers Boggs. This large signed canvas depicts a view of figures unloading boats on a quayside. The work is signed lower left and in superb original condition on its original frame. A stunning work in excellent condition.

Title: “Unloading the Fishing Boats"

Signature: Signed lower left

Medium: Oil on original canvas

Provenance: Private French collection

Size: c15 x 22 inches unframed / 23 x 30 inches framed

Condition: Very good original condition

Frank-Boggs was a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His generally small drawings are spontaneous and lively, while his many watercolours, which form an important part of his work, are highly nuanced. A lover of Paris, he painted its many views - quays, buildings and the banks of the Seine - as well as French and foreign ports, the lively markets of small towns in La Rochelle, the Netherlands, Belgium and Venice, in pictures with an identifiable style that were attractive to the public. Between 1906 and 1907, he also made etchings.

Frank-Boggs exhibited until the end of his life at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received several distinctions, including being placed out-of-competition, and was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1998. In 1885, he exhibited Rough Sea in Honfleur in New York, which won him a prize of 2,500 dollars.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Maritime impressionist oil paintings focus on capturing atmospheric light, weather conditions, and nautical subjects using fluid brushwork, naturalistic colour palettes, and open compositions.

Artists used oil-based pigments applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, secured onto wooden stretcher frames, and typically presented within moulded or carved giltwood frames.

Authentic period canvases display natural craquelure patterns, slight yellowing or oxidisation of varnish, artist signatures, and age-related darkening on the wooden reverse.

Position the artwork as a focal point above a sideboard or console table, allowing the detailed composition and ornate frame to contrast cleanly against neutral wall tones.

Keep canvas paintings away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting the ornate frame lightly with a soft, dry brush and consulting a professional conservator for surface cleaning.
