This mahogany pedestal desk was made to the highest standard during the second half of the 19th Century. You can see by looking through the accompanying images, the artisans who designed and made this desk wanted the mahogany to be the focus of attention, rather than unnecessary embellishments. That''s not to say there isn''t any fine detailing, there is .... the fine stop chamfering that runs vertically along the corners of each pedestal greatly increases the aesthetic appeal of the desk. They extensively used fiddle-back mahogany (natural vertical striations/streaks running through the grain) because its reflective qualities are almost jewell-like, however, there needs to be a good depth of polish if the surface is really going to sing, and the surface of this desk has a fine voice!
