In Borneo, particularly among the Iban Dayak people, handwoven ikat textiles known as pua kumbu were crafted for ceremonial and spiritual purposes. These resist-dyed cloths served as sacred barriers, ritual garments, and status symbols depicting complex cosmological stories and ancestral protection motifs.

Traditional ikat panels are created using a warp-resist dyeing technique where cotton yarns are tightly wrapped with plant fibres in specific patterns before dyeing. Once dyed using natural roots, barks, and leaves, the yarns are carefully aligned on a back-strap loom and woven into dense fabric, often joined down the centre seam.

Authentic antique pieces display slight irregularities from hand-spun yarns, subtle tonal variations characteristic of natural vegetable dyes, and hand-stitched central join seams.
