Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this piece to the 1850s.
There were several centres around Uzbekistan which produced suzanis in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the most recognizable is Nurata as their designs were often decorated with large shrubs that emanate from the corners of the field as is the case with this truly beautiful suzani. The design is very well balanced in the field with the classic Nurata design of shrubs emanating from the corners to the centre. The borders are elegant and give a nice sense of movement with lots of variety in the leaves and flowers. The colours are pale and delicate which gives a very light impression. Note also that the outlines of the ornaments are drawn in a lovely gold silk rather than in brown or black. This is a delightful suzani which would work beautifully as a hanging or cover in many traditional or contemporary settings.
