FAQs

Four-poster beds originated in medieval Europe, where heavy curtains were used around the bed frame to retain heat and provide privacy from draughts and servants.

These beds are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, joined using traditional mortise and tenon techniques alongside hand-turned wooden components.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, natural wear patterns on the wood, hand-woven or historic textiles, and authentic hand-tool markings rather than modern machine fabrication.

Pairing a traditional canopy bed with minimalist walls and neutral contemporary bedding creates a striking focal point that balances historic character with clean, modern lines.

Maintain antique wooden frames with microcrystalline wax and protect historic textiles from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent degradation of the original fibres.
