Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian four-poster bed is a bedstead featuring four vertical columns at each corner supporting an upper frame or canopy, historically known as a tester. During the nineteenth century, these beds often incorporated mahogany construction, intricate marquetry, and carved detailing.

These bedsteads were predominantly crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, selected for structural stability and grain strength. High-status examples frequently featured decorative timber veneers, marquetry inlays, and occasionally ceramic or glazed porcelain column sections.

Authenticity can be determined by examining construction joints, such as hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, alongside timber wear consistent with age. Original iron or steel bed bolt fixings within the rails and natural oxidisation on unpolished underside surfaces also indicate period construction.

Position the bedstead as the primary focal point along a main wall, maintaining clear pathways around the structure. Pair the dark timber frame with tailored neutral linens, muted wall colours, and minimal modern side tables to balance the substantial architectural scale of the piece.

Dust mahogany surfaces regularly with a soft cotton cloth and apply beeswax sparingly twice yearly, buffing along the direction of the grain. Clean glazed porcelain sections using a lightly damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemical detergents or abrasive pads that could scratch ceramic glazes.
