Description

A fine quality Victorian mahogany pedestal desk.

Solid mahogany plinths, well figured timber to top and curl mahogany drawer fronts.

Full length mahogany lined drawers with working locks and original wooden threaded knobs. Distinctive inset panels with ogee mouldings to the back make this very attractive from both sides.

Newly fitted gilt and blind tooled black hide.

Victorian pedestal desks gained immense popularity during the 19th century, evolving from earlier partner desks to serve the administrative needs of the expanding British Empire and industrial businesses.

These desks were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over secondary timbers like pine or oak, frequently featuring inset leather writing surfaces with gold tooling.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, original brass or wooden turned knobs, hand-tooled leather writing inserts, and appropriate signs of age and wear to the timber.

Pairing a dark wood pedestal desk with contemporary minimalist seating and abstract art creates a balanced juxtaposition that anchors a contemporary home workspace.

Maintain the timber using traditional beeswax polish, avoiding silicone-based sprays, and treat the leather insert with specialized leather balms to prevent cracking while keeping the desk away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
