Antique Shahsavan saddle bag face in soumak technique.

Circa 1870.

An outstanding soumak bag face with the classic Shahsavan all over repeat medallion design, superb natural dyes throughout. The bag face is very finely drawn with great use of colour, the ivory ground border frames the bag face very well. Note the decorative and colourful closing lappets at the top of the bag.

The bag face is in outstanding original condition with very slight wear and no repairs.

The bag face has been hand washed and is ready for display. An outstanding and collectable example.

A Shahsavan bag face is a woven textile panel originally created by the nomadic Shahsavan tribe of northwest Persia and the Caucasus. These panels formed the decorative front of double saddlebags (khorjin) or large cargo sacks (mafrash) used for transport and storage.

Soumak textiles are flatweaves constructed primarily from hand-spun wool on a wool warp. The technique involves wrapping coloured supplementary weft threads over and under the warp strands, creating a durable, textured surface with distinct diagonal surface patterning.
