This is an original mid-20th-century oil on board landscape painting titled 'The Hills At Lillydale' and signed by the artist J. Van Megchelen in the lower-left corner, depicting a tranquil summer scene with tall gum trees, a lake, a rustic wooden fence in the foreground, and rolling blue mountains in the distance. The work is set inside a heavy two-toned gilt moulded frame lined with cream linen fabric, displaying gold, brown, and blue tones throughout the composition. The framed piece measures 50.8 cm high, 60.9 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep. Suitable for display in a domestic interior, the artwork is designed for placement above a sideboard in a living room, dining area, or hallway. The painting hangs securely on a wall to introduce a traditional pastoral landscape motif into a mid-century modern setting. The combination of oil paint, wood, and linen provides a textured finish that complements a variety of wall colours and interior spaces.

FAQs

Mid-century landscape oil paintings typically feature expressive impasto brushwork, earthy colour palettes, and simplified natural forms that reflect mid-20th-century artistic movements.

Artworks from this period were commonly rendered using oil paint on stretched canvas or artist board, framed in moulded timber with gilding or linen-lined inner slips.

Authentic pieces often exhibit natural craquelure, subtle oxidisation on the frame, period-specific backing materials, and original artist signatures along the lower edge.

Position the framed artwork above a timber sideboard, mantelpiece, or desk to add warmth, botanical tones, and historic texture to contemporary schemes.

Display the artwork away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity, dusting the frame and surface gently using a dry, soft microfibre brush.
