Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Ebonised furniture, popularised during the Victorian era, involved staining timber such as fruitwood or mahogany to imitate expensive ebony. This style experienced a significant revival during the mid-19th century, heavily influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and a renewed appreciation for Japanese design.

These cabinets were typically constructed from sturdy secondary woods like pine or oak as a carcase, faced with fine-grained timbers that accepted black stain well. They frequently featured hand-applied gilt bronze or brass mounts, marquetry inlay, and glazed door panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, old secondary woods on the interior, and appropriate wear patterns consistent with age. Hand-gilded details and traditional varnish finishes rather than modern polyurethane also indicate period manufacture.

An antique credenza serves as a sophisticated focal point in a contemporary living space or dining room. It can be paired with minimalist modern art and neutral walls to let the dark wood and gilt details stand out without overwhelming the room.

Preserve ebonised surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and maintaining stable humidity levels to prevent wood movement. Clean gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid chemical polishes or water, which can damage the traditional finish.
