Reverse painting on glass, also known as verre eglomise or vitrail, is a technique where the image is painted directly onto the back of a glass panel so that it is viewed from the front through the glass.

These works typically utilise hand-blown or float glass panels, oil or enamel paints applied in reverse layers, and simple wooden frames made from oak, mahogany, or maple.

Authentic pieces often exhibit age-related characteristics such as minor paint flaking, hand-bevelled glass edges, old framing nails, and oxidisation on the reverse protective backing.

Hanging the piece against a dark or neutral wall accentuates the luminosity of the glass, while pairing it with modern minimalist furnishings creates a striking contrast between old and new.

To prevent pigment degradation, keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and clean the glass surface gently with a dry microfiber cloth.
