Description

A late 19thC oak framed bronze plaque of a spaniel or hound or other retriever dog dating to c1880. Almost certainly created in France, the plaque depicts the dog, on point, standing among dense bulrushes beside a lake, with woodland landscape beyond. As is typical of French bronze casting, the plaque is finely detailed and deep, placing the dog and bulrushes in high relief. The dog has a long wavy coat and tail, and these are lightly gilded for a dynamic effect. The plaque is framed in a light oak antique frame. Excellent condition.

FAQs

During the 19th century, French metalworkers and sculptors frequently produced cast bronze plaques and reliefs, often featuring animalier subjects, sporting themes, and naturalistic scenes favoured by the bourgeoisie.

These pieces were typically crafted using traditional foundry techniques such as the lost-wax method or sand casting, resulting in durable copper-alloy bronze with varied patination.

Authentic items generally exhibit period-appropriate patination, casting seams or tool marks on the reverse, crisp detailing in the relief work, and natural wear consistent with age.

An antique bronze plaque provides textural depth and focal interest when mounted on a plain painted wall, or displayed within a traditional study or library setting alongside other dark wood furnishings.

Maintenance should be limited to gentle dusting with a soft, dry brush or cloth. Avoid using commercial metal cleaners, harsh abrasives, or moisture, as these can strip the historical patina.
