FAQs

Fire dogs, also known as andirons, have been used since medieval times to elevate logs off the hearth to improve air circulation and burning efficiency. During the Victorian era, manufacturing shifted towards ornate cast and polished brass designs, reflecting the periods preference for decorative domestic metalwork.

Traditional fire dogs are typically constructed from cast iron for structural strength, often featuring applied or solid brass fronts, finials, and scrolled legs. Components were frequently cast in sections and secured with threaded rods, bolts, or iron pins.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy construction, hand-filed casting seams, natural patination, and wear consistent with age and heat exposure. Makers marks, registration numbers, or specific casting irregularities can also help determine the period of origin.

Fire dogs can be placed within an active or decorative fireplace hearth to anchor the space and introduce metallic warmth. They also work well standing in an empty fireplace recess paired with birch logs or decorative spheres.

Maintenance involves gentle dusting and occasional cleaning with a non-abrasive cloth to remove soot and prevent corrosion. Excessive polishing should be avoided to preserve the historical patina and surface character.
