The technique involves applying enamel into open metal cells without a permanent backing plate, creating an effect similar to stained-glass windows.

Plique-a-jour pieces typically feature fine gold, silver, copper, or gilt brass wires that form the framework, filled with ground silica glass and metallic oxides to produce translucent coloured enamels.
